Stewart's Wilt
- Issue type

- Seedborne
- Yes, travels on seed

- Affects
- Corn
Symptoms
Pale water-soaked streaks with wavy margins following the veins, and in seedling infection of susceptible sweet corn a systemic wilt that kills the plant outright.
Management
The bacterium overwinters in the corn flea beetle rather than in soil, so severity tracks winter temperatures and beetle survival rather than the previous crop. It is seedborne at low frequency, which makes it a phytosanitary concern in seed export as much as a field disease.
Varieties with documented resistance
| Variety | Level | Code | Basis | Days | Breeding |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ambrosia | - | Independently observed | - | F1 hybrid | |
| Argent | - | Independently observed | - | F1 hybrid | |
| Incredible | - | Independently observed | - | F1 hybrid | |
| Bodacious | - | Independently observed | - | F1 hybrid |
This is the page where the difference matters most, because it is where a variety gets chosen for its resistance. Breeder declared means the claim comes from whoever breeds or sells the seed, which for most resistance genes is the only evidence that exists. Independently observed means an institution with no stake in the sale grew the plant and reported what happened.
