Seed is where agricultural biotechnology actually ships. A trait is a gene construct in a patent filing until a breeder puts it into adapted germplasm and a seed company multiplies, tests, and bags it; from that point on, every question about biotech in agriculture becomes a seed question. This section collects the working history: the industry positions, the programs, and the agreements that governed how engineered traits moved through American seed.
The foundational industry position, preserved in our archive from its original home on this domain, framed genetic engineering as continuous with a century of breeding methods that never occurred in nature, from embryo rescue to mutagenesis. The 2004 companion piece on cultivation and labeling laid out the U.S. policy stance during the years Europe and America diverged: safety assessment of the product, not the process, and labeling reserved for material differences in the food itself.
Two artifacts of that era repay attention because both were hosted here and both still draw citations. Market Choices was the industry’s certification mark for identifying non-biotech seed options during the coexistence debates; the seed industry suspended the program in October 2008, and the announcement page remains a reference for how voluntary non-GMO marketing worked before third-party verification took over that job. The AgAccord answered a harder question: what happens when biotech traits go off patent? The Generic Event Marketability and Access Agreement, opened for signature on October 31, 2012, committed signatories to maintaining regulatory approvals for expiring events so that generic traits would remain legal to trade internationally, the seed industry’s equivalent of generic pharmaceuticals with the regulatory dossier problem solved by contract.
