Potato Virus Y
Potyvirus yituberosi · virus · also: PVY
- Issue type
- disease
- Seedborne
- No
- Resistance code
- PVY, PepMoV, TEV
Symptoms
Vein-banding mosaic and puckered young leaves, with stunted plants and small unmarketable pods. Spread by aphids in seconds of probing, which is why insecticides rarely prevent it.
Management
Resistance genes are the practical control, and commercial pepper varieties list potyvirus resistance (PVY, TEV, PepMoV) as a package because the same recessive pvr genes often cover several. Reflective mulch delays aphid arrival; roguing infected plants early limits the within-field spread.
